Abstract

Nonstoichiometric MgAl spinel single crystals grown by the Verneuil technique have been investigated autoradiographically. Periodic fluctuations of Al have been found. In addition, a distinct influence of diffusion and evaporation onto the concentration of Al could be deduced. Above growth rates of ≈1 cm/h crystals of large diameter (≳4.0 cm) show sporadic inclusions of not perfectly molten powder particles.
