Abstract

The classical fringe‐disappearance method of optical interferometry was incorporated into an automated system for calibrating vibration pickups. The new feature of the technique is the ability to set the vibration level corresponding to a fringe‐disappearance condition by an algorithm. For this purpose only the dc component of the photodetector output needs to be monitored. The complete system includes a Michelson interferometer, a minicomputer, and a digital voltmeter. Measurements of acceleration sensitivity performed by this method are compared with the results obtained by other techniques. Factors affecting the accuracy and precision of the new method have been investigated, and are discussed in considerable detail.
