Abstract
General Electric Plastics has a fast growing site located in Bergen op Zoom, The Netherlands. One after another, chemical and extrusion plants are coming on-stream in the last years. All these plants have a high degree of automation.At GE Plastics, production is taking place continuously, as well as batch-wise.Our paper will describe batch processes in general as well as the experience gained with respect to their automation. Special attention will be given to system set up and configuration of application control software for automation of batch processes.The description will follow the line from process operation to items like plant analysis, batch units, shared equipment and, finally a successful batch control software implementation.We shall make recommendations with respect to allocation of tasks between hard- and software, and state our expectations about future developments.We shall illustrate the various subjects by some examples from General Electric Plastics BV.
