Automating search and retrieval of patents in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Abstract

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) is in the process of becoming automated. This is considered necessary because of the tremendous volume of paper within the office—both documents stored in its files, and applications in various stages of processing. The largest file is the Patent Search File. Examination of applications, which is central to the U.S. patent system, requires that the Search File be complete and accessible. The PTO has developed an elaborate Patent Classification System to accomplish this. The system uses three basic tools to group patents; class schedules; cross references; and search notes. Existing automated databases for patents are most effective when used in conjunction with the Patent Classification System. The developers of the Automated Patent System recognize the value of combining the present system with enhancements made possible by technology.
