Abstract

The author discusses mechanical computer-aided engineering (MCAE). He describes how software for desktop computers is replacing trial and error in modeling and analysis, and sometimes serves as the front-end database of computer-based manufacturing. As an example, he examines how an engineering consulting firm specializing in low-volume speciality items redesigned a package for weapons that required environmental sensitive enclosures with an airtight seal. Other uses of MCAE are considered briefly.
