Abstract
This chapter describes the characteristics of presently available equipments in terms of how they are or can be used in a complete system of data processing so that the weak links in the data processing chain become clear. It also presents the basic concepts of some present developments of means of strengthening these weak links. These descriptions can aid geophysicists in planning and executing expanded research and operational programs in the future as well as stimulate the development of automatic data processing equipment, which can better serve the needs of the geophysical sciences. In context to unitary digital records, the development and use of records using unitary numerical notations can eliminate most of the slow and inefficient steps in processing observational data, as well as provide superior records for manual interpretation and assimilation. The unitary digital records offer significant advantages such as they require minimum of recording space and they are convenient forms of input and output records for any type of digital, analogue, and automatic communication.
