Abstract

An automatic process gas chromatograph is described, capable of sampling from corrosive gas systems ranging in pressure from subatmospheric to several atmospheres. The instrument is mobile and essentially self contained. Provision for column selection and for continuous control of sample pressure and flow allows application to a wide variety of problems. A special gas sampling system was selected to satisfy requirements for leak tightness in subatmospheric sampling. Particular attention is given to the problem of obtaining representative samples from highly reactive gas systems. Applications of instruments of this type at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant include the identification of halocarbon coolant leaks into the uranium hexafluoride process gas. Special techniques yield a coolant sensitivity of 20 ppm and an analytical cycle of 1½ minutes.
