Abstract
In this study the feasibility of the application of an automatic image analyzer, the Texture Analysis System (TAS) of Leitz Wetzlar for automatic morphometric studies of peroxisomes in rat liver is demonstrated. Selective cytochemical staining of peroxisomes with the alkaline DAB reaction provides sufficient contrast permitting the automatic detection of peroxisomes and the determination of their morphometric parameters. The light microscopic analysis of semithin sections by TAS provides a fast and economical approach for detection of significant peroxisome proliferation and thus may be useful in screening various drugs and chemicals suspected of having such an effect.
