At recent annual meetings stockholders have requested a mechanism to facilitate the reinvestment of dividends. Shareholders in financial corporations have long enjoyed such a privilege, but not until 1968, when Allegheny Power System, Inc. instituted an automatic dividend reinvestment (ADR) plan, did such ADR plans become available to shareholders of nonfinancial corporations. Since 1968, 264 non-financial companies have instituted ADR mechanisms, and it appears highly probable that rapid growth in this type of stockholder service will continue.
