Abstract

Strip Breakage in tandem cold rolling process causes damages to work toll, mill equipment and more mill down time. Automatic detection of breakage and stopping of mill helps in minimising these problems. Most of the tandem mill with conventional control system does not support strip breakage detection logic. This paper describes a simple and reasonably successful way for automatic detection of strip breakage between any pair of Stands. The proposed detection logic has been realised with - roll forces, stand speeds, inter-stand tensions, motor armature currents and exit gauge. It detects the strip breakage during metal threading, constant rolling and trailing out of metal. The application software also collects pre and post breakage data and generates report at the end of shift.
