Abstract

An electronic system is described which is capable of discriminating among horizontal, vertical and oblique synchronous rapid eye movements (REMs). A simplified model expressing the voltages recorded on the electrooculogram as a function movement angle is presented. A computer solution of the equations was used to provide parameter values in the design of a special purpose hybrid hardware system for the detection of eye movement direction. The system analyzes two electrooculogram (EOG) channels to first determine if a REM is present, and secondly the eye movement direction is then categorized as being either horizontal, vertical or oblique.
