Abstract

The planetary missions have highlighted the needs for automatic operations to be performed on board space vehicles. This paper presents the solutions adopted within the data handling subsystem for the ESA - ISPM and GIOTTO missions to satisfy the most demanding tasks related to the on-board autonomous actions. These actions consist of the spacecraft monitoring and control in the critical phases of the mission during the manoeuvres carried out without ground coverage or at very long distances from the earth. The selected approach is based on intelligent units equipped with microprocessors which have problem oriented real-time software architecture. Moreover the subsystem is equipped with an high reliable watchdog in charge to store the parameters which are vital for the mission and to operate the critical redundancies selection in case of an board failures.
