Abstract
Anomalous AVO reflectors can be defined as those whose seismic amplitude varies with offset or incidence angle in a manner markedly different from the majority of nearby reflectors (known as the “background”). An increase or decrease of amplitude with offset is not anomalous if most other reflection amplitudes vary in similar proportion. Such would be the case if an overriding offset-gain function were applied to the gathers, either intentionally or inadvertently. AVO anomalies are of keen interest in exploration geophysics, since they are usually caused by abrupt changes in the Vp/Vs ratio across a reflection boundary, which are often associated with the presence of sandy reservoirs or hydrocarbons.
