Abstract

Summary The automated percutaneous lumbar discectomy is a relatively new alternative to open surgery for removing disc material following a prolapsed intervertebral disc. Results of the procedure, which is carried out under a local anaesthetic, depend on patient selection. The main advantage is that it decreases hospitalisation. Treatment by the physiotherapist can begin immediately and less time is spent with the patient compared to rehabilitation following open surgery. The technique has few contra-indications or disadvantages.
