Abstract

Implementing VSC HVDC links into a meshed interconnected AC system, as planned in Germany, requires adequate operational strategies that continuously provide the power set points to the DC links. In this paper an automated operational strategy is proposed for adapting the transmitted power of parallel DC links to the current system conditions, taking the line loadings and other parameters into account. The concepts consider two objectives for the operation: the optimization of the loading of AC lines and the minimization of the overall transmission losses. The automatic methods compute the power set point based on the voltage angle difference at the converter's connecting points. This paper describes the implementation of the control concepts and presents analysis of them for use of several quasi-parallel DC links. The case study of four selected scenarios with DC links embedded in a meshed AC grid shows good applicability when one, two or three DC links are operated simultaneously.
