Abstract
Purpose/Objective: Organ delineation is currently the most time-consuming part in radiation therapy planning (RTP). This procedure is usually performed by manual contouring in 2-D slices using simple drawing tools, and it may take several hours to delineate all structures of interest in a 3-D dataset. Recent transition from conformal methods to Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and increasing interest in 4D radiotherapy, which takes changes in the patient’s anatomy into account, increase the burden of organ delineation considerably. The development of fast and robust automated segmentation tools is crucial for these novel treatment methods to succeed.
