Abstract

Methods for the measurement of 5-hydroxyindole-acetic acid (HIAA) in urine by highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) require a pre-extraction stage, which has not been automated. As well as automated sampling, the Gilson ASTED XL system (Anachem, Luton, Beds, UK) provides online extraction and concentration utilizing a trace enrichment cartridge (TEC) packed with an appropriate extractant.
