Abstract

A carbohydrate-releasing activity was observed in crude cell wall preparations ofSchizosaccharomyces pombe during log phase growth. An additional peak of activity appeared during conjugation in the homothallic wild type strain, and during the formation of prezygotes in a non-conjugating mutant, correlated with the outgrowth of conjugation tubes. A third period of activity (rising to a much higher magnitude, and probably involved in spore liberation) was observed during ascus formation in the sporulating wild type strain. When the inhibitor of glucan neosynthesis 2-deoxyglucose was added to conjugating cultures, bulge-like swelling was observed in the zones of the conjugation tubes, indicating thein vivo action of wall-softening enzymes.
