Abstract

Over the past few decades, there have been tremendous advancements in the field of facial rejuvenation, especially with regards to injectable fillers. Injectable fillers have become a safe, efficacious solution to the soft tissue volume loss that plays a critical role in the aging face. The ideal filler is highly debated amongst physicians, and one must take into consideration the biocompatibility, cost, longevity, toxicity, carcinogenicity, and availability of the filler. In this article, we review the role of autologous fat as a facial filler, looking back at its inception, refinements through the years, and future direction, which have made it such a popular choice for soft tissue augmentation.
