Abstract

Autologous adipose tissue grafting is emerging as a popular orthobiologic procedure due to ease of harvest under local anesthesia in an office-based setting, high concentration of mesenchymal stem cells compared to bone marrow aspirate, growth factors, basic science and clinical studies indicating beneficial components and outcomes, and low morbidity. The technique differs from cosmetic liposuction to maximize cell viability and minimize tissue damage. Patient assessment for adipose deposits and optimal harvest site as well as instrumentation, tissue preparation techniques, and variabilities in recommended volumes are also discussed. Harvest sites described include the flank, outer thigh, buttocks, and abdomen.
