Abstract
A variety of antibodies directed against cellular constituents, some nuclear and others cytoplasmic, have been reported in patients with inflammatory myopathies; however, it remains uncertain what role, if any, they play in the pathogenesis of these conditions. The best known of these are the antisynthetase group of antibodies, directed against various aminoacyl transfer RNAs, that have the potential to interfere with the protein synthetic mechanisms of the muscle fiber.
