Abstract

AbstractThis chapter provides key information about trauma in childhood and explores how to assess and differentiate symptoms of autism spectrum disorder in children who have experienced trauma. Specifically, the chapter first reviews the literature regarding trauma in young and school-age children, including the challenges of differential diagnosis of trauma response and autism spectrum disorder. To clarify areas of symptom overlap with autism spectrum disorder, the differences between autism spectrum disorder and trauma response in early childhood and school-age children are then provided. Next, this chapter offers a framework for a systematic approach to navigating a differential diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and trauma-related disorders. Finally, two case vignettes are provided to illustrate the process of differential diagnosis.
