Abstract

Autism spectrum disorders affect about 1% of children in the UK. Research shows that an early diagnosis of the condition along with educational and social interventions optimise the life chances of those affected. Health visitors are in a key position to identify the signs of autism in infants and toddlers and make timely referrals to specialist services. This article outlines the early markers of autism to support health visitors' practice in this vital role.
