Abstract

SUMMARY Many authors wrote both dime novels and series books. Five of the most successful were Edward S. Ellis, Harrie Irving Hancock, W. Bert Foster, Gilbert Patten, and Edward Stratemeyer. They withstood virulent attacks on their work by critics of dime novels and series books to become a major factor in shaping juvenile attitudes for over a hundred years. This paper describes these men, their work, and their importance.
