Abstract

Dr. Anger raises a number of excellent points in her Editorial Commentary. As authors, the 1 that most resonated with us was the need for excellent mentorship for all trainees in urology. Training in urology, as in many surgical subspecialties, once existed largely as an apprenticeship; within the “see one, do one, teach one” paradigm, there is no implied space for novel ideas, creative thought, or independent interests. While the apprenticeship model may function well for task-based learning, it does not foster or disseminate the creative ideas needed to promote advancements in medical and surgical care for increasingly diverse patient populations.
