Abstract

Abstract: This Author Meets Critics conversation focuses on Susie Khamis’ book Branding Diversity: New Advertising and Cultural Strategies (Routledge, 2020). Khamis met with marketing and advertising specialists to discuss the following topics: how and why brands speak to and through diversity; technology’s roles in brands’ conversations about diversity; practical considerations for advertisers’ and marketers’ work on diversity-related issues; the consequences for brands when they take on social and cultural issues; brands’ needs to embrace radical transparency, or glass box branding, to be relevant and seen as authentic internally and externally; the differing ability for big versus small brands to address controversial issues; measures of brand success (increased sales versus brand awareness and contributing to a cultural conversation); and advice for students, professors, and practitioners.
