Abstract

The matrix continued fraction theory of multiquantum resonances presented earlier is applied to the experiment of Arimondo and Corbalan on optically pumped 87Rb vapour. Analytical approximations for the widths of one- and two- photon resonances measured in the experiment are derived. The widths are also computed starting from the complete expression in terms of a continued fraction of matrices. Good agreement between numerical and analytical results is found, and the fit to experiments is good. The dependence on the parameters describing the simultaneous action of the relaxation mechanisms and the optical pumping cycle is found to be strong. Consequently the comparison between theory and experiment requires accurate measurements of these parameters.
