Abstract

Computer graphics standards are moving to the second generation. The first generation standards provided application interfaces for 2D-graphics (GKS) and 3D-graphics (GKS-3D, PHIGS), a storage and interchange format for pictures (CGM), and a device interface (CGI). A reference model (CGRM) for graphics systems and a common terminology evolved which influenced the development of computer graphics as a scientific discipline. The second generation of graphics standards is aimed at open graphics environments which are easily extensible, configurable, and customizable to cover the needs of the rapidly changing computer graphics community. They do not restrict themselves to pure graphics standards but cover all presentation media like sound, animated sequences, and video. This task cannot be achieved by a monolithic standard, but rather by a common framework which allows for the integration of existing de-facto standards as well as of emerging new standards.
