Abstract

This chapter examines the notions of the ‘authentic’ in Thai contemporary theatre, and it focuses on popular Broadway-style musical theatre performed in Bangkok and produced by commercial theatre companies. Thai theatre has maintained an authentic representation of Thai culture and identity for many centuries through various types of traditional performances. Although traditional theatre in Thailand has gradually been overshadowed by these contemporary Western-influenced musical theatres, this chapter discusses the reasons why Thai audiences are attracted to modern productions that incorporate traditional elements familiar to the locals. This chapter also proposes that such aspects of authenticity help modern theatre gain popularity and success.
