Abstract

Sixty books written by parents with disabled children were examined to ascertain the scope of the problems they encountered and their reactions to their situations. Four common themes emerged and are highlighted through parents' own words. These were: 1. realistic appraisal of the disability, 2. extraordinary demands on families, 3. extraordinary emotional stress, and 4. resolution. A bibliography of the 60 illustrative works is included.
