Abstract

Otto Wacker, who died in 1970, was a famous German art dealer who came into the possession of more than two dozen previously unknown Van Gogh paintings. The paintings had been purchased by an anonymous Russian who could not afford to reveal his identity, lest his relatives in the Soviet Union bring a lawsuit against him demanding their share of the proceeds. So the paintings had been conveyed illegally to Switzerland, so that Wacker could sell them. Some contemporaries doubted the authenticity of the pieces, and a great deal was at stake in the matter, including not only money but the integrity of the Van Gogh canon.
