Abstract
The Australian National Genomic Information Service, ANGIS was developed for the use of Australian molecular biologists, genetic engineers and biotechnologists to assist in the retrieval and analysis of sequence data from nucleic acids and proteins. It is accessible nation-wide over the Australian Academic and Research Network (2 Mbit/sec bandwidth). Currently ANGIS maintains 20 databases and over 400 application programs. It consists of three main sections: 1) a utility section, used by the system's manager and programmers to write and modify ANGIS software and to tailor the databases so that they are useable by the application programs running on the system; 2) the retrieval section, used to find, extract and compare specific sequences of nucleotides or amino acid residues or to find bibliographic information, and 3) the analytical section, used to analyse and manipulate sequences from the databases or from the researcher's own work.
