Abstract

Serious skill shortages in the Australian tourism industry emerged during the 1980s as a result of rapid expansion and an inadequate training system. The Tourism Industry Training Committee network, in consultation with industry, unions, government and the education sector, has sought to address these labour market deficiencies by developing a National Training Strategy to identify training priorities over the next five years. Jennifer James, Research and Policy Manager for Tourism Training Australia, outlines these priorities and describes some of the achievements so far in regard to the Training Strategy. Current events in the political and industrial arena likely to impact significantly upon training in the tourism industry are also discussed.
