Abstract
Australia's nationally implemented school milk scheme provided liquid cows milk in special one-third pint bottles to school children from its inception in 1951 (1953 in Queensland) until 1974, at no cost to their parents. This article places the national scheme in the context of improving the safety of liquid cow's milk, dairy marketing, the British school milk scheme. and earlier state-based schemes. It discusses the establishment of this school milk scheme, and the reasons for its eventual and sudden demise.
