Abstract

The regulation of biotechnology in Australia is under review by the House of Representatives Inquiry into Genetically Modified Organisms. The essential issues are being identified and a consensus is developing between many of the State and Commonwealth departments, institutes, and organisations making submissions. A meeting of Joint Ministerial State/Commonwealth Councils was convened to explore the development of a common approach to the regulation of the development and use of Genetically Manipulated Organisms (GMOs), and to report back to Ministerial Councils. Developments in this forum will be progressively conveyed to the parliamentary inquiry. This paper has also been accepted for publication in the September issue of the Australian Microbiologist (Volume 12, 1991) and was also presented at the Pan Pacific Veterinary Association Conference held in Sydney in May 1991.
