Abstract

In 1947 the Australian Government set up the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (A.N.A.R.E.) under the Department of External Affairs to carry out a programme of exploration and scientific research in Antarctica and on Heard Island and Macquarie Island in the sub-Antarctic. For various reasons it was not possible for the A.N.A.R.E. to set up an Antarctic station in 1947–48 ; however, the Heard Island station (53° 06'S, 73° 30'E) was established in December, 1947, and that at Macquarie Island (54° 30'S, 158° 57'E) in March, 1948. The Macquarie Island station is still operating but the Heard Island establishment was closed down in March, 1955.
