Abstract

The Australian electoral system has pioneered numerous voting methods to achieve 'free and fair' elections and a flexible system of law has accommodated innovation and ensured public confidence. However Australia's traditional electoral practices like secret ballot and compulsory voting are inconsistent with basic electoral principles and innovations like major electoral reviews, computerization, new registration methods, tough campaign finance laws and clear laws regulating political advertising are essential to continue with the tradition of free and fair elections.
