Abstract

Abstract Recent Australian state and federal coastal management initiatives are reviewed from a North American perspective. Queensland's 1991 coastal protection strategy is emphasized. Declining coastal water quality is identified as a critical problem. Substate multiple‐use regional planning encompassing coastal catchments (watersheds) is recommended for emphasis in Australian coastal management.
