Abstract
This chapter analyses the strategic shifts that Australia Post introduced to stay competitive in the postal industry. One of the key focuses of this case is how Australia Post has radically and successfully repositioned itself from a government-run organisation to a Government Business Enterprise (GBE). As part of this process, Australia Post adopted a franchising system to drive down costs, as the government forbids the closing of unprofitable post offices due to Australia Post’s community obligation. This GBE has also formed alliances with compatible companies to provide new services as well as to increase the efficiency of existing services. This chapter also discusses how Australia Post has taken a quick and smart decision to provide services during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has used its brand name and Australia wide networks to reach communities living in remote and regional areas. Australia Post has gained the capability and successfully diversified itself to the extent that as a GBE it will remain a well-performing enterprise.
