Abstract

Thirty-one clinically florid cases of Indian childhood cirrhosis (ICC), of which 12 were proven by biopsy, were studied, by immunoelectroosmophoresis, for the presence of Australia (Au)/hepatitis-associated antigen in their sera. None of the cases showed either the antigen or the antibody. In contrast, sera from 625 blood donors showed a carriage rate of 4 per cent for Au antigen. It is suggested that SH virus is an unlikely aetiological agent of ICC.
