Abstract

In 1969, Shulman and Barker [1] and Purcell et al. [2] found, by measurement of anticomplementary activity, that Australia (Au) antigen immune complexes (Au/AuAb) are present in sera of patients with acute viral hepatitis (AVH). This observation was confirmed by electron microscopy in the same year by Almeida and Waterson [3], who observed particles of Au antigen covered by antibody. These important findings prompted us to analyze additional sera obtained from patients with different forms of hepatitis. For this purpose, we adapted the immunofluorescent test (IFT), using as a substrate liver obtained at autopsy from a leukemic patient who had large quantities of Au antigen.
