Abstract
This article purports to demonstrate that Ausonius’ subtle allusion to Propertius 3, 1,13 in Mosella 389 sheds light on his literary intentions and helps to reinstate him as a creative poet who makes intelligent use of Hellenistic poetics (albeit filtered through the Augustan poets) in an age generally considered lacking in artistic vitality.
