Abstract

E-region drift velocities in the Auroral Zone have been observed by the spaced receiver technique at Tromsø, Norway (69.66°N, 18.94°E). Drift velocities have been obtained for disturbed as well as quiet magnetic conditions. The drift velocities derived are mainly eastward in strong negative magnetic bays and westward in strong positive bays. At midday a northward velocity is observed during quiet conditions. Several observations reveal a rather erratic drift pattern, particularly during medium disturbed conditions. These results are attributed to a lack of a dominating driving force in the ionosphere during such periods.
