Abstract
A procedure is presented for deriving the ion velocity distribution function in the auroral F-region ionosphere allowing for large ion drifts relative to the neutral atmosphere and linearly unstable electrostatic waves. The ions are considered as magnetized and the ion-neutral collision frequency is assumed to be much less than the ion gyrofrequency so that the distribution is gyrotropic.
