Abstract

Mitochondria proliferate by growth and partition during every cell-division cycle. Recently, Kashatus etal. (2011) reported that Aurora A kinase regulates the small GTPase RalA to mediate mitochondrial fission. This work illuminates the molecular mechanism behind mitochondrial inheritance in mammals and extends the functional repertoire of a key mitotic regulator.
