Abstract

In 1890, faced with the overcrowding of asylums, the General Council of the Seine decided to create, on a trial basis, a family placement program which consisted of a colony for inoffensive incurables. Inspired by Dr. Auguste Marie (1865-1934), a young psychiatrist, a family colony was created in 1892 in Dun-sur-Oron in the Cher department. It was the only department at that time to volunteer to put this new type of care into practice. The Family Colony opened its doors in the city's former stagecoach relay station on December 17, 1892. Dr. Auguste Marie was appointed Medical Director of the colony by a ministerial decree dated October 5, 1892.
