Abstract
This paper deals with the use of viscoelastic composite material (VECM) for the constrained layer of an active constrained layer damping (ACLD) treatment for enhanced damping characteristics due to contributions of extensional strains in addition to transverse shear strain. The proposed VECM layer is composed of graphite fibers reinforced in a conventional viscoelastic matrix. The bending analysis of the overall beam is carried out and contributions of extensional and shear strains for damping behavior are found out. The effects of changing various geometric parameters of the present VECM layer on the control performance of the ACLD treatment have also been evaluated and presented.
