Abstract

Terbium-containing oxide fluoride glasses were prepared in TbF3–BaF2–AlF3–GeO2 and Tb4O7–BaF2–AlF3–GeO2 systems. Auger electron spectra (AES spectra) of these glasses have been measured to characterize those glasses. Quantitative analysis of cation content in the glass was performed with relative sensitivity factors in the differentiated AES spectra estimated using 10TbF3–20BaF2–10AlF3–60GeO2 and 2.5Tb4O7–20BaF2–10AlF3–60GeO2 glasses as references. Tb4O7–BaF2–AlF3–GeO2 glass exhibits a smaller change in glass composition than TbF3–BaF2–AlF3–GeO2 glasses. The electronic state of Al3+ in the glass prepared for this study greatly changes with the GeO2 contents.
