It is a practical guide for assessing auditory behavior in infants and young children that should be of particular use to students of human communicative behavior. The book begins by outlining the development of the human auditory system and the roots of communicative behavior. The author gives a well-referenced and readable summary of auditory pathways and neural mechanisms of audition. In the following chapters, the author discusses methods of studying auditory behavior in infants and relates her personal experience in a bio-acoustic laboratory. She details the responses of newborns to sound and the methods for measuring these responses during early life.
