Abstract

Background: Antimicrobial resistance has become a global problem in many health care centers including the Siti Hajar Islamic Hospital Sidoarjo. This research was conducted to find out how the quantity and quality of antibiotic use in hospitalized patients treated by internal medicine specialists physicians at Siti Hajar Islamic Hospital Sidoarjo. Methods and materials: This research was conducted retrospectively by compiling and extracting secondary data in the data collection sheet and then processing it based on guidelines for Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification and DDD assignment in 2017 for quantity; and for quality using the review method with the Gyssens flow algorithm from the completed review form. Secondary data were obtained from medical records of inpatients treated by internal medicine specialists physicians who had left the Siti Hajar Islamic Hospital Sidoarjo from January 14, 2019 to February 28, 2019. Results: To find out the quantity of antibiotic use, there were 30 samples of inpatients treated by internal medicine specialists physicians who were discharged from the hospital during the study period of which 16 of them used antibiotics. Based on the audit, the quantity of antibiotics used was ceftriaxone 38.89, levofloxacin 7.64 and meropenem 4.86 in DDD/100 patient days. Meanwhile, to find out the quality of antibiotic use, there were 30 samples of inpatients treated by internal medicine specialists physicians and getting antibiotics, who were discharged from the Hospital during the study period. Based on an audit using the Gyssens flow chart, the quality of antibiotic use according to categories 0 to VI is VI 26.2; V 45.2; IV 26.2 and 0 2.4, all in percent (%). Conclusion: An audit of the use of antibiotics in inpatients treated by internal medicine specialists physicians in quantity and quality in succession shows the high use of antibiotics ceftriaxone and the high use of antibiotics that are not wise.
